Wat Susahn Sahlahwangthan

Wat Susahn Sahlahwangthan (often written as Wat Susan Sala Wang Than) is a historically significant site in Lampang Province. While it is technically a cemetery temple (the word Susahn means cemetery), its fame is tied to the early meditation years of the legendary monk Luang Phor Kasem Khemako.

History: From Royal Monk to Cemetery Ascetic
The history of this site is the story of a monk who chose extreme simplicity over his royal and administrative status.

The Royal Heritage: Luang Phor Kasem (1912–1996) was a descendant of the Lampang Royal Lineage (Chao Keo Nawarat). He was high-born and initially served as the Abbot of Wat Bunyeun, a prominent temple in the city.

The Great Resignation (1949): Luang Phor Kasem grew weary of the administrative duties and the "distractions" of a large temple. In 1949 (B.E. 2492), he secretly left his position as Abbot, leaving only a letter behind. He moved to Susahn Sahlahwangthan, which at the time was a quiet, desolate cemetery.

The Period of Asceticism: It was at Sala Wang Than that he practiced his most rigorous meditation. He refused a comfortable bed, choosing to live in a small hut near the crematorium. He often meditated in the open air, regardless of the scorching sun or torrential monsoon rains, to contemplate the impermanence of life (the core of the Asubha meditation practice).

The Legacy of Luang Phor Kasem
While Sala Wang Than was his "training ground," the devotion of his followers eventually turned the site into a major pilgrimage destination.

Amulet Fame: Amulets blessed by Luang Phor Kasem at this site are legendary. Because he was considered a "pure monk" who had no interest in money or fame, his amulets—especially the Phra Kring Siriraj (1975) and various Rian (coins)—are highly valued for protection and business luck.

Connection to King Rama IX: The late King Bhumibol Adulyadej was a devoted follower and traveled to Lampang several times to pay respects to Luang Phor Kasem, recognizing his deep spiritual attainment despite his unorthodox life in a cemetery.

Transition to Susahn Trailak (The Current Site)
As more devotees flocked to see him, a larger complex was built nearby, known as Sussaan Trailaks (Three Landmarks Cemetery).

The Undecayed Body: Today, if you visit the area, the main site is the Sussaan Trailaks Meditation Center. Luang Phor Kasem’s body is kept there in a glass coffin; miraculously, his body has not decayed, which followers view as a sign of his enlightenment.

Giant Statue: You can't miss the site because of the massive standing statue of Luang Phor Kasem that towers over the entrance, visible from the main road.
